What this job actually involves

Pre-extension drain survey — how it works here

Building over or near a drain is allowed, and it is done constantly in north Warrington. What causes trouble is doing it without knowing what is down there: a run that was already failing gets buried under a new room, a chamber gets covered rather than relocated, and the problem surfaces two years later under a floor you cannot lift.

Questions about pre-extension drain survey

Do I need permission to build over a drain?
If the run is a public sewer — and since 2011 many shared runs in WA1 and WA2 are — you need a build-over agreement from United Utilities. The first step in getting one is establishing what the run actually is and where it goes, which is this survey.
My builder says it will be fine. Is this necessary?
He may well be right. But a dated survey from before the work protects both of you: if a defect appears afterwards, the record shows whether it was already there. Builders who have been caught by that once tend to welcome it.
